Ionescu, Stefano: Antique Ottoman Rugs in Transylvania

Rome 2005

275 color plates 85 black and white plus map 226 pp. 9.5 x 13.5 Hardback in dustjacket in Very Good condition.

First standard English edition. Numbered and limited. The aim of this book is to present a thorough and detailed review of the historical and material evidence, and to provide soundly-based answers to the question of both the origin of the carpets and the reasons for their survival. Color images of more than 250 rugs, drawn from all the Transylvanian collections, are published in color together for the first time, each with technical analysis. The famous collection of the Black Church, Brasov, is published in its entirety. The text is amply illustrated and documented, including statistical data relating to these ' classical' groups. Not only does this bring the Transylvanian material into clear focus for the first time, but it also represents an important contribution to the study of Anatolian carpets. Short essays focus on some of the major groups such as the 'Ghirlandaio', 'Holbein', Ushak and Ottoman Court rugs. Individual Church and Museum rug collections from Transylvania, as well as from Bucharest, are discussed... Among the appendices that conclude the book are biographical essays on Emil Schmutzler and Teodor Tuduc, a discussion of rugs in the Romanian principalities, technical analyses, listings of rug locations and of all published rugs by collection, and full bibliography. "The colour printing is very good, the layout is perfect..." - Michael Franses "Tutto sommato una opera degna di essere il vero successore del libro del mio nonno." - G.Schmutzler "Magnificent - well designed and printed, good colour and packed with useful and interesting information. - Danny Shaffer
